English roads are perverse enough as it is.

Don’t mess with old style countries. My dad was once sent to a literal dungeon for speeding in Spain.

England is so bad at roads that this happened.

It’s a good thing you have really stringent firearms laws there.  Here in the US someone would get shot.

Ye’, sounds bad but they are (as stated) closing and A road and diverting cars around via other A roads. Most of the local traffic will be a ble to bypass the works using B roads, etc...

The only vehicles that will be required to take the larger detour are the likes of HGVs and other road going traffic too big for B roads and smaller.

It’s to do with the size of the roads. As the road being closed is an A road- basically a major road, the official diversion route can only use roads of the same classification or higher. Whe n you look at the map you think you might be able to use the roads running between the A352 and the A37. Well, they look like this:

https://goo.gl/maps/fopdFYSXkFaCYC8a7

Single track roads. Good single track roads (exceptionally so by my standards!), but not suitable for the volume of traffic that would be coming off the A road.

Now, this diversion is only the massive detour if you are going from exactly one side of the closure to the exact other side, and if you wish to do that you’d be free to use any route you chose. You don’t have to follow the signposted diversion.

Most travellers won’t be trying to make the theoretical loop of the offical diversion , if you are using the A352 as a direct to Sherborne from the south then alternative routes would be signposted up the A37 to Yeovil.

These stories are typical local news clickbait fodder, but now with a wider reach.

Sounds like something Google Maps would do. “There was construction on this road 2 years ago so we’re going to send you on a 5 mile detour that adds 15 min to a 5 min drive. But you didn’t have to drive through that imaginary construction!”

I remember a few years ago there was a road that...um...exploded in a canyon that linked communities to the valley here. some towns the drive to the bigger towns with services went from an hour and a half to 4+ hours.

Yes, it is good for UK citizens in that regard. Here in Chicago though, a 1 mile detour and you never know who is going to go off what rail, so to speak.

Yeah, I get all that and I won’t argue it isn’t a little clickbait-ish. Thing is though, for anyone who does follow the official diversion without prior knowledge of where it goes, that would suck. Or for the people who have to use A roads, sucks for them as well.

To be fair, I did the math and the detour you posted is 1,312x longer than the closed section. My detour is only  5.83x longer. Based on miles not time driven
